Delhi Police Special Cell on Saturday arrested a resident of Jamia Nagar for his alleged involvement in the August 14 murder of estate agent Wasif Sattar Gazi in the South Eastern District. Police identified the accused as Amir Alvi, a member of the Nassir gang, who allegedly provided a shooter and weapons for the murder.
In a widely publicized incident, with CCTV footage circulating on social media, Gazi was rammed and knocked off his bicycle by three unknown assailants on bicycles, before being shot by them at point-blank range. A case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections 25 (punishment for offences) and 27 (punishment for use of arms) of the Arms Act was registered at the post of Jamia Nagar.
Police said they received information on Saturday about Amir, who is believed to be a key conspirator in the murder. A raid team was dispatched to Sarai Kale Khan bus station, where the suspect was subdued by police. Police said a pistol and five live rounds were recovered from him, while another pistol used in the killing of Jamia Nagar and clothing worn by one of the shooters in the video were also recovered.
Pramod Khushwah, DCP (Special Cell/New Delhi Range), said: “Amir’s gang member Azim had approached him regarding a financial and real estate dispute between his sister and Gazi. He wanted Amir’s help to eliminate Gazi. Amir conducted a reconnaissance of the victim and arranged the murder weapons.
DCP added that one of the shooters was also provided by Amir as they both planned the murder and that he helped one of the shooters get rid of his clothes and weapons.
Police said that in 2016, the accused and his associates murdered Mohammed Moin Khan, assistant advocate for the New Delhi City Council, and were granted parole in May 2021. They added that he had become acquainted many criminals in prison, including Azim, who was a close associate of criminal Nassir, gaining access to the gang.
