Colorado’s Land Ownership Preservation Program Helps Renters and Homeowners

Colorado lawmakers have allocated nearly $ 20 million in federal CARES law funding to help residents qualify for emergency rental assistance. The Property preservation program came out of Bill 1410, which was adopted at the end of June to help Coloradans with housing assistance linked to COVID-19; he allocated $ 19,650,000 to Housing Development Grant Fund, administered by the Housing Division within the state Department of Local Affairs.

“It has been an incredibly difficult time for many Coloradans,” Governor Jared Polis said in a statement announcing the launch of the program on July 17. “I would like to thank the lawmakers who worked on this bill and applaud them for their efforts. This fund will help Colorado residents who have been financially affected by the pandemic and need rental assistance. This pandemic is far from over, and we will continue to work to do all we can to help bring some relief to those who have been significantly affected. The program provides rent and mortgage assistance, as well as advice on how to access other housing services, to Coloradians who are struggling to afford housing costs during the pandemic. State Representative Serena Gonzales-Gutierrez, one of the main sponsors, points out that it offers universal benefits to all those struggling with the housing crisis – tenants, landlords and landlords.

Under the program, landlords and landowners can request payment of eligible tenants in arrears who have been in financial need since March 1, 2020 and have not received other housing assistance related to the state’s pandemic. “This is great because it allows people who may not feel comfortable asking for government resources not to have to, because their owners can apply on their behalf,” Gonzales said. Researchers from COVID-19 Deportation Defense Project predict that by September, Coloradans living in 181,000 households risk of being deported. They predict the biggest wave of evictions will come at the end of July, when the unemployment benefit extension ends – and while $ 20 million is a start, that won’t solve the whole problem.
